PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This qualification is intended for lay counsellor who will educate and counsel communities about the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Its purpose is to equip qualifying learners with:
  • Knowledge and understanding of the communities within which those living with life-threatening conditions such as HIV/AIDS find themselves confined and the ability to communicate with all members of these communities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the processes of adult learning and the ability to successfully communicate new information so that a change in behaviour is brought about.
  • Knowledge of human behaviour and the ability to provide a means to achieve emotional and physical support for those in distress.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of personal and community sanitation and the ability to initiate improvements in this area.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the cause and effect of life threatening conditions especially HIV/AIDS.
  • The skills to work as a team member and as a provider of support services within a multidisciplinary health care team

    Rationale for the qualification:

    A national priority in South Africa is to address the many problems associated with HIV/AIDS which is prevalent amongst individuals, families, groups and communities. This qualification is geared towards enabling those health workers, both lay and professional, who find themselves particularly in frontline of under-resourced communities.

    Composition of components of the qualification:
  • Fundamental: All 36 credits are compulsory
  • Core: All 94 credits are compulsory
  • Elective: The learner must select a minimum of 5 credits from the Elective component

    Total: A minimum of 135 credits

    Integrated assessment:

    Assessment is not a single event but rather a structured process of gathering evidence and making judgements of the learners' performance in relation to the qualification. A range of formative and summative methods can be used in assessing learners, this may include:
  • Written and oral tests/examinations
  • Case studies and assignments
  • Role play and simulation sessions
  • Written reports/work plans
  • Peer group review
  • Feedback from beneficiaries

    Assessment should be carried out at regular intervals as well as at the end of the periods of study and should be offered in an integrated way. It is envisaged that learners will work at more than one unit standard at a time.

    The learners should produce sufficient evidence of achieving each specific outcome of each unit standard. This evidence should initially be assessed for competence by the educator/facilitator.

    Once the facilitator believes that the learners has demonstrated competence in a particular unit standard, the facilitator should recommend the portfolio for external moderation by a registered assessor. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification is unique to South Africa and is appropriate for the unique needs of social services in this country as well as other neighbouring countries within the Southern Africa region. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification provides access to NQF level 5 qualifications in related health, development and social care fields 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of integrated assessment 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Criteria for the registration of assessors:
    Persons assessing learners against this qualification must:
  • Be a professional person
  • Be suitably qualified at a minimum of NQF level 5
  • Be experienced in the fields of primary health care and community development
  • Be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA
