PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Select the most suitable equipment for watering plants and landscapes.
  • Operate a manual irrigation system effectively.
  • Control the length of a cycle to ensure that the correct amount of water is applied to the planted areas.
  • Perform basic maintenance on sprinklers and irrigation piping.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy Level 1 or equivalent.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Select the appropriate watering equipment to apply water to select plants or a small planted area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The occasions in which fine droplets from a watering can or hand-held spray nozzle are needed, are explained in terms of plant and container requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The situations in which watering may be conducted with a bucket or hand-held hose without a nozzle, are described in terms of the plant maturity and container sizes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The methods of conducting watering to prevent the wetting of tiled or paved areas are explained in terms of the selection of the correct equipment and watering techniques.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Select sprinklers that will apply the required amount of water and suit the planted area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The characteristics and operation of the major sprinkler types are described in terms of their suitability to various planted areas.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The criteria for selecting sprinklers to suit the coverage and droplet size are described in accordance with the requirements of the planted area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The importance of preventing runoff and soil erosion is explained in terms of the selection of the appropriate sprinklers and watering durations.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Operate an irrigation system to apply an even precipitation over a planted area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The term "rate of precipitation" is defined in terms of the amount of equivalent rainfall, per hour, that an area under irrigation receives.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The operational time of each zone is described in accordance with the time needed to achieve the required precipitation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The advantages of using a "solid set" irrigation system as opposed to a portable pipe/dragline system are explained within the context of the evenness of application and "set-up" requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The importance of adhering to uniform spacing of watering positions of draglines and portable pipes is explained with respect to the uniformity of application and precipitation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Conduct basic maintenance of manual watering/irrigation equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The methods for inspection and testing the various sprinkler types are demonstrated in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The cleaning and routine maintenance of the various sprinklers are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The procedures for the caring of watering cans and hose-end irrigation equipment are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The correct handling procedures when transporting and storing irrigation equipment are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.
