PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to carry out phlebotomy related tasks by applying the relevant knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.

They will also be able to progress to learning skills such as the collection of blood and non-blood specimens for pathology or blood transfusion purposes. This will enable qualifying learners to fulfill their role in the phlebotomy field thus enhancing health care delivery in the country.

    Terminology specific to medical pathology and phlebotomy, different laboratory disciplines, their basic functions, laboratory tests, departments/sections in a hospital, health care specialities, the names and meanings of common medical investigations and procedures, medication that influences the interpretation of the results of specific laboratory tests, medical equipment and instruments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Medical terminology relevant to medical pathology and blood transfusion is spelt and pronounced correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Anatomical directional terminology is described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Medical terminology is correctly used when communicating orally and in writing with patient, clients, co-workers and health care professionals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Abbreviations common to each system, to associated common diseases, to laboratory tests and relevant to the workplace where the learner is currently employed are understood and used in the correct context. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.

  • The respiratory system includes exchange of gases (internal and external).
  • Digestion: The basics of ingestion, digestion, absorption and elimination.
  • Urine formation and excretion.
  • Endocrine: Names of glands and the hormones produced.
  • Male and female reproductive system: Menstruation to be included.
  • Nervous system includes Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS).
  • Heart: Pulse and blood pressure.
  • Terminology: Names of laboratory sections, hospital departments and medical specialities. Construction of medical terms in terms of prefix, suffix and root.
