PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who wish to become polygraph examiners and need to have a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology relevant to the administration of a polygraph examination as a means of uncovering deception.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the general anatomy of the human body.
  • Analysing dermal activity and related pathologies that influence a polygraph examination.
  • Analysing the nervous system and related pathologies that influence a polygraph examination.
  • Analysing the structure and function of the cardiovascular system and related pathologies that influence a polygraph examination.
  • Analysing the respiratory system and related pathologies that influence a polygraph examination.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 4. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is the use of the polygraph to detect deception:
  • Chemical substances include, but re not limited to, prescription medication, over the counter medication, illegal and other substances.
  • Polygraph examination refers to the complete polygraph process.
  • Test refers to the administration of specific questionnaires as part of the polygraph process.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the general anatomy of the human body. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The anatomy of the body is analysed in terms of its component parts and their functions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The movement of the body and the movement of fluids and other substances around the body are explained with reference to the characteristics of the different muscle groups. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Analyse dermal activity and related pathologies that influence a polygraph examination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The structure of skin is explained with reference to the role and functions of the sweat glands. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect of sweat on a polygraph examination is explained with reference to secretion, hydration, innervation and re-absorption. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Skin conditions that could affect the recording of a polygraph examination are investigated with reference to the quality and clarity of the tracing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Dermal activity that is evident in a polygraph examination is explained with reference to autonomous nervous system activity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The effect of chemical substances on the electro-dermal activity is explained with reference to the possible modification of the polygraph tracing and outcome of the result. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Analyse the nervous system and related pathologies that influence a polygraph examination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The structure and function of the nervous system is analysed with reference to the brain and spinal cord and their related parts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Anatomy of the nervous system includes, but is not limited to, cells, neurons, divisions of the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, synapses, autonomous nervous system, interneurons, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, afferent and efferent nerves.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The innervation of action potential is explained with reference to the implications for polygraph examinations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Pathologies of the nervous system are investigated in terms of their potential affect on the recording of a polygraph examination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The effect of chemical substances on the nervous system is explained with reference to the possible modification of the polygraph tracing and outcome of the result. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Analyse the structure and function of the cardiovascular system related pathologies that influence a polygraph examination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The structure and function of the cardiovascular system is analysed with reference to how blood circulates around the body and the implications of changes in cardio vascular activity for the polygraph examination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Pathologies that could affect the recording of a polygraph examination are investigated with reference to clarity of the tracing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Factors that influence the recording in a polygraph examination are discussed with reference to interpretation of the result. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The effect of chemical substances on the cardiovascular system is explained with reference to the possible modification of the polygraph tracing and outcome of the result. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Analyse the respiratory system and related pathologies that influence a polygraph examination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The respiratory system is analysed with reference to structure and function. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The mechanics of breathing are explained with reference to its influence on recording a polygraph examination and interpretation of the result. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Pathologies of the respiratory system that could affect the recording of a polygraph examination are investigated with reference to quality and clarity of the tracing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The innervation of the respiratory system is explained with reference to the effect of neural control on the respiration process. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Neural control includes the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and chemical control.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The effect of chemical substances on the respiratory system is explained with reference to the possible modification of the polygraph tracing and outcome of the result.

  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
