PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who administer polygraph tests and require the ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate information in order to make a decision or substantiate an opinion.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Analysing the needs of the client.
  • Interrogating the environment.
  • Analysing the facts of the case.
  • Synthesising information to inform a decision.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is the use of the polygraph to detect deception:
  • Polygraph examination refers to the complete polygraph process.
  • Test refers to the administration of specific questionnaires as part of the polygraph process.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Analyse the needs of the client. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The expectations of the client are analysed to determine the output of the investigation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Relevant documentation, the attitudes of stakeholders and involved role players are analysed to identify any obstructions to polygraph testing. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Interrogate the physical environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Operational processes and procedures that could influence a specific incident are analysed to determine discrepancies or deviations from accepted practice in the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Records of previous incidents of a similar nature are analysed to identify similarities or commonalities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    'What if' scenarios are applied to interrogate deviations from accepted practice and offer a possible explanation for the event.

    The sequence of events is analysed to establish exactly what happened and possible sources of information.

    Information is gathered, recorded and analysed to identify fact and fiction and establish whether the information is sufficient to identify possible subjects.

    The possible motive for the crime or case is inferred based on available information.

  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
