The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner to an NQF Level 3 competency. The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a wood preservation manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5. |

Manage the grading and classifying of debarked poles and timber. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The prescribed management criteria are adhered to facilitate that the poles are correctly classified and graded and meet the required specification for preservation treatment as per work instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The appropriate guidance is given in the overseeing of the correct marking of graded and classified poles, resulting in these poles being assembled into the correct diameter and length classes and grades as per specification. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Checks are in place to verify that the correct application of the prescribed markings to facilitate that the poles undergo the appropriate processing and treatment and that the markings agree with the dimensional and grading classes of poles and timber. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Checks are in place to facilitate that the marking process complies with the prescribed work rate and standards for the process as detailed in the work instructions. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Oversee the identification and removal of reject poles and timber for further processing. |

The process of identification and removal of reject poles is overseen and guidance given to facilitate that batches of graded and marked poles and timber comply with the prescribed specifications as detailed in the work instructions. |

Checks are in place to facilitate that the process produces batches of graded poles of uniform size and grade as per specification. |

Checks are in place to facilitate that the records are accurate and complete, i.e. containing all the required information regarding stock passing through the treating process. |

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS |
An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.
