PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for people who can describe the influence of wood structure and properties, and certain production factors on its quality, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the wood quality requirements generally specified by the main users of wood products (Range: all relevant appearance specifications and strength specifications)
  • Describe the effect of wood growth properties on these quality requirements (Range structure, knots, spiral grain, juvenile wood, reaction wood, annual rings, heartwood and sapwood)
  • Describe the effect of machined wood properties on these quality requirements (Range; dimensional accuracy, surface quality)
  • Describe the effect of the drying out process of wood on these quality requirements

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF 3;
  • An understanding of the structure of wood and its relationship to its strength and appearance, and how it holds water;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF 3.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
    Choose from one of the following:) Wood Preservation, Tannin Extraction, Trusses, Charcoal Manufacture, Match Manufacture, Bulk Bin, Box and Pallet Repair and Manufacture, Veneer and Plywood, Fibreboard and Chipboard

    a) The scope of this Unit Standard covers:

    i The typical scope of this Unit Standard covers the "Range" as described in the specific outcomes of this unit standard.
    ii The personnel involved in the Wood Products plant.
    iii The raw materials processed and products produced in the Wood Products plant.
    iv The basic work procedures and health and safety requirements relevant to the Wood Products plant.
    v The basic environmental management principles relevant to a Wood Products plant.

    b) The typical context of this unit standard is the training of a Learner at NQF Level 4 in the effect of wood growth and production factors on its quality

    c) The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 4, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a Wood Products manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 4 to 6.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:
