PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

The qualifying learner is capable of carrying out maintenance checks on off-the-road (OTR) tyres; removing a wheel from a heavy OTR machine; demounting a heavy OTR tyre from a wheel; demounting a tyre from a heavy OTR machine; mounting a heavy OTR tyre to a wheel; and fitting a wheel to a heavy OTR machine.

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

Carry out maintenance checks on off-the-road (OTR) tyres.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

1. Inflation checks are carried out on cold tyres and tyre pressures are adjusted according to tyre manufacturer's specifications for cold pressure settings.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

2. Hot pressure checks are performed to determine pressure build-up during operating conditions, and any pressure build-up above 25% from cold settings is reported to the supervisor or operator of the machine.

3. Visual inspection of a machine's tyres is completed and recommendations for further use or repair are given to the supervisor or operator of the machine.

4. Factors that determine tyre performance are identified in accordance with tyre manufacturer's recommendations.

5. Tyre maintenance checks are carried out on the machine according to tyre manufacturer's recommendations, and any damage or action required to prevent damage is reported to the supervisor or operator of the machine.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

The standard describes competent performance in checking, demounting and mounting heavy of the road equipment tyre, and lay down the criteria by which competence should be judged, as well as the range of circumstances in which competence should be demonstrated.

Integrated assessment methods and tools will allow the candidate to demonstrate that she/he has acquired knowledge of and can safely and effectively apply competence identified in this unit standard.

These methods must be carefully selected based on the purpose of the assessment (for example, the written method of assessing knowledge or on-job demonstration of practical competence). The assessment must integrate a number of different methods in order to give the assessor reliable and valid proof of competence and evidence of required attitudes.

Candidates are assessed against these assessment criteria. Currently employed candidates are observed carrying out their normal work duties by an assessor. They may also be asked to carry out simulated tasks and to answer written and/or oral questions. Candidates studying towards a Unit Standard, and who are not currently employed, will also be assessed using variety of assessment tools.

Training providers offering the qualifications, or part thereof, shall be accredited in terms of the criteria laid down by the relevant SETA/ETQA.

Qualified Assessors will be appointed by the training institutions offering the qualifications and must be registered and accredited with the relevant SETA/ETQA.

Requirements of a portfolio

Valid, reliable and authentic evidence (presented as a portfolio of evidence) from past achievements and experience which serves to supplement the assessment of applied competence.

The portfolio may include inter alia:

Written statements from persons (e.g. current and/or previous employer, colleague, peer, manager, external customers) confirming competence of the learner

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE

Heavy off-road equipment in this unit standard refers to earth moving equipment, grader equipment, loaders, dozers, and other heavy portable industrial equipment using tubed or tubeless radial and cross ply tyres.

This unit standard refers to maintenance checks and removal and refitting procedures only. Repairs should be carried out by an industry-recognised tyre vulcaniser

Reference to suitable tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices
