PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Log on to and log off from a computerised Building Management System (BMS) and observe the system operating parameters, note set point deviations, undesirable or unsuitable operating parameters or trends and recommend corrective action.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Operate a computer.
  • Sufficient and suitable knowledge of and experience on the relevant discipline.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Commonly applied BMS systems as applied to air-conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation systems.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Log on to and log off from the computerised BMS system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. The correct procedure to log on and off is followed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. The correct procedure to access the relevant system within the BMS program is followed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Ability to access individual sections and pieces of equipment of the plant is demonstrated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. The correct procedure is used to return the BMS system and user interface to the initial, as found, status.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
    5. Consequences of following the wrong procedures are explained.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Observe the system operating parameters.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Operating parameters are correctly observed and interpreted.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Set points are correctly determined.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Operating and maintenance instructions are consulted when necessary.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. No attempt is made to access the BMS system beyond read only access level.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Determine deviations from the normal design operating set points.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. All deviations from set points are observed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Reasons for deviations are determined and suitable corrective action is proposed.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
Any person wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, who may appoint a moderator to be present at the assessment.

The assessor must have knowledge and experience of air-conditioning or refrigeration.

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
The system of interrogating an air-conditioning or refrigeration system by means of a software program installed on a computer combined with electrical wiring interconnecting a variety of sensors installed on the plant.

    Work instructions and procedures.

    Consequences of altering operating parameters

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    Identify and solve problems
  • Nature and extent of deviation from specified performance is diagnosed

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect, analyze, organize and critically evaluate information
  • Reading and interpreting operating and maintenance instructions

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
Use science and technology effectively and critically
  • Appropriate use of the computer program

  • UNIT STANDARD NOTES
This unit standard has been replaced by unit standard 116413, which is "Monitor an air-conditioning, refrigeration or ventilation system through the building management system", Level 4, 8 credits.

Learners are to be assessed on a BMS system with which they are familiar.
Learners may be assessed on an air-conditioning, a refrigeration or a ventilation system.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
