PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners who currently are, or will be, involved in the repair, installation and maintenance of electronic telecommunications equipment. Learners assessed as competent in this unit standard are able to repair and/or replace faulty components, and restore specified technical performance to electronic telecommunications equipment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Plan and prepare for repairs to electronic telecommunications equipment.
  • Perform technical support according client requirements.
  • Test electronic telecommunications equipment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and prepare for repairs to electronic telecommunications equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fault diagnosis data is documented and confirmed to determine an action plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment and resources needed are selected and organised to carry out the identified task. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment include but are not limited to test equipment modulation meters, distortion meters, frequency counters, direction of material management, spectrum analyser, oscilloscopes, power meters, attenuators, 2M Tester, tools, plant, machinery relevant to the equipment to be repaired. Resources include but not limited to sub-contractors, internal personnel, materials and timetables.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment to be used in repair/installation/maintenance is checked to ensure that is in a safe and fully operational condition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Repair documentation is accurate, complete, and available for future reference by authorised personnel. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Legal requirements, manuals, plans, contractual obligations, trade practices, fault histories and service records.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform technical support according client requirements. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Technical support include but is not limited to repair, install, maintenance, restore or replace specified technical performance to telecommunications equipment components. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Client requirements are verified in order to perform technical support customer post-repair needs are identified in order to take the required action. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment component and system operation are restored to specified technical performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment, plant, and tools used for repair are refurbished, in fully operational and safe condition, and in the correct place ready for immediate re-use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Technical support is completed in accordance with the plan, agreed customer expectations, equipment specifications, and safety regulations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment specifications include but are not limited to manufacturer's, operational. Safety regulations include but are not limited to personal, personnel and equipment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Technical support task is recorded and reported in terms of organisational guidelines. Documentation relating to the repair of equipment components is completed and stored in accordance with organisational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Documentation includes but is not limited to invoices, histories, project reports, stock re-ordering, sign offs, warranties and contractual obligations.

    Test electronic telecommunications equipment.

    Tools to conduct testing are selected in accordance a given task.

    Equipment is tested to identify faulty or malfunctioning components.

    Potential causes for malfunctioning of the equipment are detected in order to take corrective action.
