PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard meets the needs of specialised cleaning in the form of high pressure cleaning that uses specialised equipment. The learner will be able to apply the processes and procedural standards for a range of high pressure cleaning assignments, in various cleaning work assignments and contexts.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to use high pressure water jetting systems to clean surfaces. Users could be in a domestic or industrial environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the hazards and risks associated with high pressure water jetting.
  • Prepare the water jetting system.
  • Operate a high pressure water jetting system to clean surfaces.
  • Perform post cleaning operations.

    Explain the hazards and risks associated with high pressure water jetting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Risks associated with the use of a high pressure water jetting unit are explained in terms of different cleaning surfaces. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Risks may include, but are not limited to:
    > Persons in proximity of the water jetting unit in operation and associated accessories, water under pressure, condition of equipment, surface damage, flying debris, open electrical connections, water quality, ergonomic requirements, deterioration of equipment and un-calibrated equipment.
  • Surfaces may include, but not limited to: Steel, aluminium, concrete and masonry.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment (PPE) is described in terms of its purpose and application. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    PPE may include, but is not limited to:
  • Hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, long sleeve overall, gloves, safety shoes and industry specific PPE (rain suit, steel toe gum boots, face visor, turtle suit/Kevlar suit).
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety measures in terms of high pressure water jetting systems are explained and demonstrated in accordance with manufactures' and work-site instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety measures may include, but not limited to:
  • High pressure gun safety triggers, foot valve, bursting disc, pressure relieve valve and restrainers.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Consequences of non-adherence to operational requirements are explained in terms of the impact on health, safety and the environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Operational requirements may include, but are not limited to:
  • Legal framework, manufacturers operating instructions, personal protective equipment, selection, examination and transportation of tools, material and equipment, pre-use examination and area examination.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools, materials and equipment are identified in terms of the surface to be cleaned. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tools, materials and equipment may include, but are not limited to:
  • Pump unit, hoses and connectors, high pressure gun and accessories.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The condition of tools, materials and equipment are assessed in terms of suitability for the surface to be cleaned. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The procedure to report unsuitable or defective equipment is explained in accordance with work-site or standard procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A worksite is prepared in accordance with operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation may include, but is not limited to:
  • Authorisation, work-site procedure, barricading, equipment, risk assessment and scope of work.

    A high pressure water jetting system is assembled in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A high pressure water jetting system is used in accordance with operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Operation must include:
  • Starting procedure of water jetting unit, warning and removal of persons, operating of the water jetting gun, re-positioning or adjustment to the water jetting system.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The impact of unforeseen changes during the operating process is explained in terms of the expected outcome. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Unforeseen changes may include but are not limited to:
  • Weather conditions, permit amendments and water supply.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Cleaning techniques for the various surface types are explained in accordance to operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Techniques must include:
  • Angle of attack, Stand-off distance and nozzle selection.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Cleaning techniques for the identified surface type is demonstrated in accordance with operational requirements.

    Demonstrations may either be actual or simulated work environments.
