This unit standard is for persons learning about the essential features of and processes involved in the industrial and/or commercial laundry environment.

Learners credited with this unit standards are able to:

  • Explain the importance of the use of chemicals in the laundry process.
  • Explain the principles of the laundering process.
  • Describe the essential components required in the washing process.
  • Describe the drying process.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify items used in the laundering process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The types of fibres and fabrics used in clothing and furnishings are described in terms of categories and their characteristics. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fibres and fabrics may include but not limited to fibres originating from natural sources such as animal by-products (e.g. Wool, silk) and vegetable matter (e.g. Cotton, linen, flax). Also regenerated materials (e.g. Dicel, Tricel, Orlon, Rayon) and synthetic man-made fibres (e.g. Polyester, nylon etc).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Care labels and symbols on items to be laundered are explained using manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons for handling laundry items with care are explained in terms of the benefits to the customer and the business.

    Explain the use of chemicals in the laundering process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Chemicals used in the laundry industry are listed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Chemicals may include but not limited to soapless detergents; alkalis; soil suspending agent; optical brightening agent; soap; enzymes; bleaching agents and water softening agent.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect of each chemical on the different types of fabric is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Each type of bleach is explained in terms of its effect on the laundering process. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Type of bleaches may include but is not limited to sodium hypochlorite; hydrogen peroxide; sodium perborate and reducing bleaches.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reasons for using sour (acid), antichlor, fabric conditioner and starch is explained in terms of their benefits to the quality and finish of items.

    The importance of planning for laundering and keeping to a plan is explained in terms of the successful completion of a task and customer service.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The five essential components are listed in terms of requirements for the washing process. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components may include but not limited to water; chemical activity; time; temperature and mechanical action.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use of water during the wash process is described in terms of the amount, the quality and the hardness of water. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effect of chemical activity during the wash process is described in terms of types of soiling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The effect of time on the wash and rinse process is described in terms of the type of soiling, degree of loading and items being washed and rinsed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The effect of temperature during the wash process is described in terms of the type of soiling, thermal disinfection to be achieved and bleach rinse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The effect of mechanical action during the wash process is described in terms of the design of the machine, degree of loading and the level of water.

    The basic principles of tumble drying are listed in accordance with industry best practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Types of tumble dryers are listed in accordance with industry best practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The performance of a tumble dryer is explained in terms of the filters, the fans, the air flow, correct loading and a well sealed tumble dryer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reasons for choosing the correct drying process is explained in terms of productivity and the successful completion of task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Preventative maintenance on all tumble dryers is performed in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
