PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of Process Technology.

Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of plant design.

Analyse a manufacturing plant design with respect to product and process technology.

This unit standard is intended for manufacturing mangers who need to ensure the manufacturing of quality products within a changing technology environment and by improving and maintaining existing technology cost effectively. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment for any individual within the manufacturing environment.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

The scope and context of this unit standard is to ensure the manufacturing of quality products within a changing technology environment and by improving and maintaining existing technology cost effectively.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of process technology.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

The equipment required in the learner's operation are identified and discussed according to accepted practice.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Equipment include but are not limited to utilities, raw material, packaging equipment, process equipment, water, heating, retorting, steaming, milling, grinding, sifting, mixing, scada equipment and conveyors.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Continuous Improvement techniques are identified and described according to accepted theory and practice.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2

Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of plant design.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Design principles are identified and discussed according to recognised theory and practice.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Design principles include but are not limited to quality, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Legislation, ergonomics, risk, capacity, cleaning and sanitising, accessibility, ventilation, distribution, expansion, network design, product characteristics, waste management and the principles of layouts.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

A report is completed on the principles of plant design relevant to the learners own production process.

Analyse a manufacturing plant design with respect to product and process technology.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

A proposed manufacturing design is analysed according to plant design principles.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Recommendations are made for the improvement of the proposed design according to plant design principles.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Manufacturing plant design and manufacturing output refer to production block flow diagrams, layout and process flow diagrams, mass balance, capacity, raw material, packaging and output balances.

An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.

Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.

Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
