PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard are capable of demonstrating cleaning, sanitising and sterilising in the salon according to industry accepted standards.

The qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements in a salon.
  • Demonstrate hygiene and sterilising practices in a salon environment.
  • Apply the different methods and procedures for hygiene and sterilisation in a salon environment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of OHS requirements in a salon. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The purpose of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS) legislation in the workplace is explained for compliance purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety signs and symbols are identified and the purpose is explained with regards to cases of emergency. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Workstation is adjusted to comply with OHS guidelines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Seat is adjusted to comply with OHS guidelines. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Seat is adjusted according to height and angle, backrest height and angle and footrest where appropriate.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Computer cabling is positioned safely according to company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The purpose of the Emergency Procedure Instructions in the workplace is described in accordance with legislation and company procedures.

    Emergency Procedure Instructions include but are not limited to evacuation procedures, First Aid Kit, Emergency Telephone Numbers, bomb threat and fire.

    Equipment storage and maintenance is described and demonstrated according to required specifications and accessibility for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Chemical storage and maintenance is described and demonstrated according to required specifications and accessibility for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    The roles and responsibilities of key personnel are described in accordance with occupational health and safety legislation and company procedures.

    Demonstrate hygiene and sterilising practices in a salon environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The application of personal care and protection in a salon environment is demonstrated in accordance with standard hygiene practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The salon environment is sanitised and sterilised according to standard salon practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Salon environment include but is not limited to floors, working surfaces display cabinets, mirrors, basins and toilets and linen.

    Apply different methods and procedures for hygiene and sterilisation in a salon environment

  • Methods include but are not limited to wet and dry.
  • Techniques include but are not limited to chemical, heat and mechanical.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The purposes of sterilisation and sanitation of tools, equipment, materials and work areas in a salon is explained in accordance with organisational and OHS requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hygiene and sterilisation procedures for apparatus are demonstrated in accordance with standard salon practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Apparatus include but are not limited to equipment and implements.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Diseases and disorders encountered in a salon are identified and described in order to take preventative action. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preventative action include but is not limited to referral to health practitioner, maintain according to standard practices.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Possible bacteria, viruses, fungi, pathogenic and non pathogenic that may be encountered are explained in the context of health and hygiene. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Areas where bacteria, viruses and fungi are most often encountered in the salon environment are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The difference between "disinfection, sanitation " and "sterilisation" are explained with example. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Dry disinfection and sterilisation procedures are explained in accordance with organisational requirements.

    Wet disinfection and sterilisation procedures are explained in accordance with organisational requirements.

    Procedures to prevent the spreading of infectious and non-infectious diseases and disorders are explained in accordance with organisational requirements.

    When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment.
