PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for a person working within the beauty salon environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to explain the concept of deportment and its importance in the workplace.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Apply the communication skills for effective customer service in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate deportment in the workplace.
  • Maintain good conduct, behaviour and discipline in the workplace.

    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication skills at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 3.

  • Communication skills include but not limited to body language, non-verbal communication, gestures, posture, facial expression, touch, walking, eye contact, dress and grooming.
  • Deportment includes but is not limited to posture, standing position, sitting position and slouching.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Methods of communication are explained in terms of creating a professional image in the beauty environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Methods of communication includes but are not limited to verbal and non-verbal communication, written, presentations and letters.
  • Verbal communication includes but is not limited to words, sound, speaking and language. Non-verbal communication include but is not limited to body language, eye contact, smile, facial expression, gestures, posture, voice, space and adornment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The significance of non-verbal and verbal communication in beauty environment is explained within the context of maintaining a customer/salon technician relationship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of interpersonal skills is explained within the context of active listening to interpret client messages and give feedback. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Interpersonal skills include but are not limited to active listening, reflective listening dealing with one-to-one interfaces.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of deportment is explained in terms of image, personal presentation and appearance, style and well-being in a beauty salon industry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Personal appearance, style and wellbeing include but are not limited to the importance of appearance and style in the hair and beauty industries and expected standards of personal presentation; the impact of lifestyle choices, including opportunities for improvement and own personal style and lifestyle preferences.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Regulations relating to dress and grooming are applied in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of dress code, personal hygiene and behaviour is explained within the context of how they improve personal image in the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Causes and outcomes of poor posture are identified and explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Good posture is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Deportment is applied in the workplace with examples.

    Guidelines of deportment in the workplace is explained in the context of creating awareness of deportment requirements.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
