PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to understand the historical and cultural significance of selected dance forms. This will give a background of a chosen dance genre which will help them follow a career in dance or interact with role players in that specific dance industry. Learners will have a grasp on the impact history has on a particular dance genre in order to relate it to the present status of the dance genre.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the concept of dance.
  • Distinguishing and identifying the impact of specific innovators and innovations.
  • Exploring dance origins and time lines.

    An historical overview is given for a selected dance genre with a specific focus on South African history of the dance genre.

    The use of symbolism and imagery are investigated in dance.

    Symbolism and imagery for three different genres must be investigated.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The relevance of the specific dance genre is explained in terms of its impact on society.
