PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners accredited with this unit standard will be able to discuss the importance of supplementary restraint systems, the components and their functions, test and diagnose problems in supplementary restraint systems and replace and/or repair components of the supplementary restraint systems. The unit standard involves the application of both the theory and skills to achieve these autotronics-specific outcomes.

    Discuss the operation of vehicle supplementary restraint systems 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The function/purpose of the supplementary restraint systems is discussed to show how they contribute towards safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The supplementary restraint system is discussed in terms of its relationship to other systems of the automobile. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The different sub-systems of the supplementary restraint system are discussed and their inter-relationships are explored. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sub-systems include systems include seat belts, the air bag system, pyrotechnically triggered systems, vehicle body frame, steering column, dash and trim panels.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The SRS circuit diagram is analysed and used to explain how the system works and how the diagram helps to resolve problems associated with the system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Aspects pertaining to safety, health, environment and housekeeping are discussed to maintain safety of self and others. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The manufacturing specifications on the supplementary restraint systems are discussed to demonstrate the importance of these specifications in interpreting and performing any work on the system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The components of supplementary restraint systems are identified and discussed in terms of their functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components include pyrotechnically triggered belt fasteners, shoulder belt and buckle fasteners, impact sensors, pyro-technical gas inflators, deactivation switches, warning lamps, steering wheel clock spring and control unit.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The links between the components (if any) are explored in terms of how they support the supplementary restraint systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The equipment to be used when working with the components is listed and described in terms of their functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment may include digital code checker, multimeter, LED test lamp, oscilloscope, specialised diagnostic company specific equipment, pressure testing equipment and shear testing equipment.

    The principles of testing and diagnosing are discussed to provide a background for the actual task.

    Different types of diagnosis are conducted according to procedure.

    Types may include the electronic method/procedure, the mechanical/visual method or procedure.

    A situation (context) is evaluated and a decision taken about what to test and diagnose.

    Testing equipment is selected and used according to manufacturer's instructions and specifications to diagnose faults.

    A test and diagnosis of required components of the system are conducted as per manufacturer's requirements.

    The coding of a new ECU if required is performed in order to integrate it into the complete system.

    Final inspection procedures and quality checks are performed on work completed and necessary adjustments are made to ensure adherence to industry standards.

    Appropriate tools and equipment are used to perform repairs and replacements of components and perform final tests.
