PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners accredited with this unit standard will be able to discuss the importance of ISAD systems, the components and their functions, test and diagnose problems in the ISAD system and replace and/or repair components of the ISAD system. The unit standard involves the application of both the theory and skills to achieve these autotronics-specific outcomes. This is an important set of competencies for an individual embarking on the NQF Level 5 autotronics qualification.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The integrated starter and alternator combination systems are discussed and their relationship with the other systems of the automobile are explored. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Other systems are the starting system, the braking system, the charging system, the vehicle electrical.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The specific circuit diagram is analysed and used to explain how the ISAD works and how the diagrams help to resolve electrical problems associated with the systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Aspects pertaining to safety, health, environment and housekeeping are discussed to maintain safety of self and others. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The manufacturing specifications on the integrated starter and alternator combination systems are discussed to demonstrate the importance of these specifications in interpreting and performing any work on the systems.

    The function/purpose of the integrated starter and alternator combination systems is discussed to show how they contribute towards reduced emissions and lower consumption.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The components of integrated starter and alternator combination systems are identified and discussed in terms of their functions and operations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components as part of ISAD may include electrical system, starter-alternator components, battery, electronic control unit, supplementary storage battery, diodes, relays, fuses, alternator components like a stator and rotor, magnetic field coils, windings, voltage regulator, AC-DC converter, DC-DC convector, drive system components, a housing for the components, nuts and bolts, end plate, bearings, overrunning clutch, armature, carbon brushes (or could be electronically controlled), bushes and solenoid (or could be electronically controlled) for the starting side of the ISAD.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The links between the components (if any) are explored in terms of how they support the integrated starter and alternator combination systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The equipment to be used when working with the components is listed and described in terms of their functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment may include hydrometer, battery tester, oscilloscope, multimeter, scan/diagnostic tool, battery charger, current probe, LED test lamp, insulation tester and manufacturer-specified equipment.
