PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who work, or intend to work in a Yacht and Boat Building environment where systems necessary for yachts and boats are installed and maintained.

The learner will be able to identify ISO and SANS standard compliant installations. Additionally, the learner will be able to follow correct procedures in the installation of fuel, hydraulic, plumbing and compressed gas systems and perform all routine maintenance procedures.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of on-board fuel systems.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of marine hydraulic systems.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of marine plumbing systems.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of compressed gas for cooking and heating.

    Demonstrate an understanding of an on-board fuel system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The components of an on-board fuel system are identified and explained according to boat building standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The components of the fuel system include but not limited to:
  • Fillers, vents, filters, hoses, tanks and fuel pumps.

    Demonstrate an understanding of marine hydraulic systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Marine hydraulic systems are explained according to operating principles and function. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The installation and maintenance of marine hydraulic systems is explained with specific reference to steering and trim systems. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of marine plumbing systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The installation, maintenance and use of marine plumbing systems are explained with specific reference to national and international standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The systems include but are not limited to:
  • Hull piping, pumps, hose types, potable water, tankage and marine sanitation.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Marine plumbing systems are explained according to operating principles and function. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate an understanding of compressed gas for cooking and heating.

    The installation, maintenance and use of compressed gas for cooking and heating are explained according to national and international standards. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the Qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual Unit Standards as well as the integrated competence described in the Qualification.
