PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for policing officials or military personnel that need to tactically assault buildings during high risk or hostage release operations. This unit standard will contribute towards compliance with tactical, legal and safety requirements related to high risk or hostage release operations.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate methods of approach to a building.
  • Interpret a target study on a building.
  • Interpret assault orders.
  • Prepare individual and team equipment for building assaults.
  • Demonstrate the penetration of a building.
  • Demonstrate clearance procedures.

    It is preferred that the following unit standard be presented simultaneously with this unit standard:
  • ID 376362: Demonstrate an understanding of urban operations.

    Through the application of these skills learners will enhance the capabilities of security organisations to maintain peace and security in the community. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Use firearms in military and law enforcement environment.
  • Use primary weapons for medium to risk assault team operations.
  • Cross obstacles tactically. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Day and night.
  • Prevailing environmental conditions.
  • Buildings to a maximum height of three levels.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate the methods of approach. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Methods of approach include but are not limited to foot, rotary-wing aircraft, vehicles, assault platforms, surface and sub-surface vessels.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The advantages and disadvantages of the methods of approach are discussed in order to determine their influence on the operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The drills applicable to the chosen method of approach are demonstrated in accordance with operational procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Interpret a target study on a building. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Information on the target buildings structural make-up is retrieved from the target study of the building. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information on the target building's interior layout is retrieved from the target study of the building. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Interior layout includes but is not limited to levels, floor layout, room layout, air conditioning, piping and furniture.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The target study is interpreted in order to gain information on the surroundings of the target building. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Surroundings include but are not limited gardens, walls, fences, security systems, lightening, drainage systems, and neighbouring buildings.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The target study is interpreted in order to gain information on the role players. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Role players include but are not limited to hostage takers, hostages, media organisations, emergency services, etc.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Interpret assault orders. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Types of assault orders include but are not limited to immediate, emergency and deliberate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The individual's role in the assault order is identified and explained in accordance with the operational plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Individual duties and responsibilities are demonstrated within the team during rehearsals in accordance with the assault orders. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Prepare individual and team equipment for building assaults. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal equipment is selected for a building assault according to its functions, uses and the method of approach. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Personal equipment includes but is not limited to coveralls, helmet, goggles, bullet-proof vest, and personal load bearing equipment, extraction harness and individual weapons.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal and team equipment is prepared for a building assault considering the method of approach and obstacles expected in order to optimise individual and team performance. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Team equipment includes breaching equipment, climbing equipment and explosives.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Demonstrate penetration techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Penetration techniques are demonstrated during building assaults in order to gain access to a specific room. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Penetration techniques include but are not limited to button hooks, high-low and high-low swivels.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The window entry drill is demonstrated by penetrating a ground floor window in order to gain access to a room. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Shot placement is demonstrated in a structured scenario with a pistol, through a window while suspended on a rope in order to eliminate a hostile target. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Demonstrate clearance procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Room clearing drills are performed by taking threat levels into consideration during a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ranges of suspects are apprehended in order to reduce the threat level. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Suspect ranges includes but is not limited to non-compliant, not aggressive; non-compliant, aggressive, not armed; non-compliant, aggressive, armed; compliant.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Contingency drills are demonstrated during a structured scenario in order to minimise the threat to the team. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Contingency drills include but are not limited to casualty drills, booby traps, immediate action drills, improved explosive device drills and counter grenade drills.
