PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is for learners to be able to produce paintings through sustained exploration of a variety of painting media, surfaces and painting conventions. The standard requires that qualifying learners are able to generate subject matter and imagery and explore the application of painting media, materials and painting conventions to the creative development and resolution of pictorial ideas and problems.

Visual artists equipped with this competence will be able to contribute to the development of a professional culture of painting practice within the visual arts, and produce artwork which is underpinned by an applied knowledge of the procedures and processes applicable to selected painting media.

Credited learners are capable of:
  • Selecting and preparing a variety of surfaces for application of painting media and materials.
  • Exploring the application of a variety of painting media and tools to surface.
  • Exploring visual conventions, genres and idioms applicable to painting media.
  • Producing and presenting finished works employing painting media.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Select and prepare a variety of surfaces for application of painting media and materials. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    A variety of surfaces include different grades and varieties of paper, cardboard, wood, canvas, metal and treated and untreated wall surfaces. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Surfaces are selected in accordance with externally set brief and painting media to be applied to surface. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    At least two different painting grounds are prepared.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Materials for preparation of surface are selected in accordance with requirements of chosen surface and media. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Materials are correctly applied to surface according to standard procedures, with due regard for archival integrity and health and safety of self and others. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Undercoats are correctly treated in preparation for application of specified painting media. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explore application of a variety of painting media and tools to surface. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    A variety of painting media includes both oil-based (enamel, oil paints, etc) and water-based (gouache, watercolour, acrylic, etc) media; painting tools includes a variety of types, shapes and sizes of brushes, palette knives and other applicators (spray applicators, sponges, etc).

    Exploration demonstrates experimentation with a variety of mark-making tools and approaches to applying media in relation to the requirements of externally set artistic briefs.

    Exploration demonstrates consideration of the properties and limitations of a variety of media, surfaces and tools in relation to the requirements of externally set artistic briefs. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Properties and limitations relates to drying time, viscosity, textural qualities, chromatic range, luminescence.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Exploration demonstrates consideration of the expressive potentials of different materials, surfaces and approaches to mark-making, in accordance with externally set brief. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Exploration demonstrates regard for issues related to archival integrity and the health and safety of self and others. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explore visual conventions, genres and idioms applicable to painting media. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Painting genres includes: landscape, still-life, interiors, portraits, etc; idioms includes a very wide range of modes of representation or expression including but not limited to traditional, naturalistic, expressionist, abstract and decorative modes of representation.

    Exploration involves experimentation with a variety of genres and idioms in the context of externally set briefs.

    Paintings demonstrate control of visual conventions and conceptual framework applicable to idiom or genre.

    Paintings demonstrate creative engagement with conventions applicable to chosen idiom/genre.

    Exploration demonstrates grasp of conceptual, representational and expressive potentials of different conventions, genres and idioms.
