PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This Unit Standard will enable learners to develop and implement optimal inventory strategies.

People credited with this unit standard will demonstrate a clear understanding of inventory management and will be able to use this understanding to select appropriate inventory strategies to suit specific situations and motivate why these are appropriate strategies.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Evaluate the concept of inventory.
  • Plan and develop an inventory system.
  • Apply inventory planning systems and models to cater for dependent demand.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • The execution of supervisory tasks.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The applied competence expressed in this standard covers the knowledge and understanding of:
  • The importance of inventory management.
  • The benefits of effective inventory management.
  • The impact of inventory management on the total organisation.
  • Various inventory management models and tools.
  • The integrated applications of these models and tools.

The range includes innovative responses to concrete but sometimes unfamiliar problems, using basic analytical interpretation of information.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
    Evaluate the concept of inventory.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The concept of inventory is analysed to determine why they are required and ways in which they are maintained for optimal inventory strategies.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The nature and importance of inventories are evaluated to determine optimal utilisation and availability of stock.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The difference between independent and dependent demand are illustrated to ascertain how inventories are managed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The concept of balancing supply with demand is examined to ensure sustainable supply chains.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Plan and develop an inventory system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Inventory planning models are identified in order to determine the conditions under which each should be used.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Inventory planning is conducted using appropriate inventory models given different scenarios.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Statistical models are used to calculate inventory levels and solve inventory problems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Practical problems in using the statistical models are identified and analysed to ensure optimal functioning of the inventory system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The requirements for effective inventory management are verified to ensure optimal customer satisfaction of inventory availability.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
A decision is made on a specific inventory system on the basis of the advantages and disadvantages of the inventory system.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Apply inventory planning systems and models to cater for dependent demand.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The concept of dependent demand is analysed to determine its influence on inventory planning systems and models.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Inventory planning systems and models are applied in accordance with the changing role of materials requirements planning (MRP) within manufacturing organisations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Inventory planning systems and models are implemented in accordance with the concepts and calculations that drive an MRP system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The elements that make up an MRP system are illustrated through their application in service operations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
MRP and just in time is used effectively in organisations by verifying the linkages with CRP.
