PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of the learning is to enable a learner to be able to capture photographic images with a still camera.

This Unit Standard contributes to the competence of those learners who want to pursue a career in the Photographic and/or Design sector, and contribute to greater levels of production and quality in this sector. The unit encompasses the preparation and maintenance of a still camera for a specific photographic brief, the use of selected still cameras to capture and safe images within a variety of genres and of different subject matters.

Credited learners are capable of:
  • Selecting applicable photographic equipment for capturing of images according to the criteria of a photographic brief.
  • Preparing the photographic equipment for a photographic assignment/brief.
  • Using a camera and photographic equipment to capture a range of photographic images.
  • Saving, documenting and evaluating photographic process.

    Technical camera settings may refer to exposure, point of focus, shutter speed, aperture, colour balance, light sensitivity and lens selection.

    Applicable technical camera settings are used to provide the desired visual effect.

    Desired visual effect may refer to depth of field, subject movement, grain, exposure manipulation, colour manipulation and focal length.

    Lighting of subject is managed to successfully fulfil the requirements of the brief.

    Lighting may refer to the use of natural and/or artificial light sources and light modifiers.
