PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard develops competencies in planning and marking-off non-routine shapes using a variety of tools and equipment, templates and techniques. This is an important set of competencies for those involved in the automotive component production environment. The selection, use and care of marking-off tools are of particular importance. In addition, all work must be carried out with due regard for health and safety of all those involved in the production environment.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Plan and prepare for the marking-off of materials using templates.
  • Perform marking-off.
  • Explain the importance of quality control and quality workmanship.
  • Use, care and store different tools and equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The method of checking and evaluating marking-off dimensions from working drawings is explained in terms of working accurately and obtaining a precise final product. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    This includes but is not limited to the methods of transferring dimensions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Processes to be used are identified and described in terms of preventing damage to materials and safety hazards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Raw materials are tested to ensure quality of final product. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    This includes but is not limited to the different types of tests for testing strength, flexibility and defects.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Scales from working drawings are converted using various suitable methods.

    This includes but is not limited to carrying dimensions over from the drawing or using templates for the marking off positions.

    The concept of roulettes is explained in terms of how they are used and their benefits in a given situation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Marking tools selected are appropriate to deal with different materials and sizes and to prevent negative influences on the final product.

    Potential defects in material are identified using appropriate methods for different materials.

    The importance of double checking the layout is discussed in view of the implications of an incorrect marking-off processes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Job instructions and engineering drawings are interpreted to ensure that production meets customer requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The sequence of activities for the marking-off process is planned to ensure a smooth process and minimum impact on the production process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of material preparation and the techniques used are explained to ensure that there is no damage to, or flaws in, the material being used. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Preparation includes but is not limited to planning, ending, smelting, knowing the properties of materials.
  • Techniques used include but are not limited to smoothing, levelling, removing burrs.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The methods of pattern drafting are discussed in terms of their importance in the marking-off process.

    Methods include the Radial Line method, the Parallel Line method and Triangulation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Templates are used on material as per standard procedure, to maintain accuracy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The method of marking-off dimensions from working drawings is described using the concept of close tolerances.

    Marking-off is performed using tools and equipment according to job specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tools and equipment include but are not limited to centre punch and hammer, V-shaped block, marking-off scribe, steel rule, steel compass, block and flat table, height gauge, dividing heads, marking agents (pens, paint, chalk, marking blue), rotary tables, trammels, parallels.

    A clean and tidy work environment is maintained after work has been completed.

    The workplace quality cycle is explained in relation to how it covers all the aspects and activities of the production process.

    Aspects include but are not limited to design, development, production, installation, servicing and documentation. It includes the regulation of the quality of raw materials, assemblies, products and components; services related to production; and management, production, and inspection processes.

    The implications of using defective materials or methods are explained in terms of cost and productivity.

    Includes but is not limited to material selection, component design, component fabrication, cost reduction, Six Sigma - value, new product development.

    The measurement tools used for marking-off are described in terms of when and how they are used and their advantages and disadvantages.

    Calibrations are performed on measuring tools and recording instruments to maintain their accuracy.

    Tools are used according to manufacturer's specifications and standard operating procedure.
