The purpose of this unit standard is to establish a strong sense of professional values and ethics and the application of the concepts and principles of ethics in the professional environment. The individual should develop an increased understanding of their own belief system and how it relates to the organisational code of conduct as well as the implications of inappropriate ethical conduct in the operational environment.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Analyse issues relating to professional and ethical conduct.
  • Evaluate an ethical code of conduct as it applies to the operational environment.
  • Apply professional ethics in practical situations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Philosophical approaches to professional and ethical behaviour are analysed against own beliefs so as to determine an appropriate framework of behaviour and practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Professional boundaries are assessed in accordance with current legislation and codes of practice applicable to the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Potential conflicts between organisational demands and professional or ethical standards are identified and described. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Evaluate an ethical code of conduct as it applies to the operational environment.

    A code of ethics as applicable to the operational environment is evaluated against internationally accepted principles for codes of ethics and gaps are identified.

    Strategies are suggested to improve the code of ethics and its implementation in the organisation.

    Practical situations are analysed and issues pertaining to professional ethics and values are identified.

    Identified issues are assessed against the organisational code of conduct and personal behaviour framework.

    Practical issues are addressed in a manner that satisfies both the organisational code of conduct and personal behaviour framework. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
