PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will acquire the knowledge and skills required to conduct horse riding lessons. These riding lessons include teaching a rider on the lunge, specific riding lessons and conducting an outride.

Learners can only be assessed competent for this Unit Standard on successful completion of NQF Level 1, 2 and 3 Equine Practices/Studies.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Applying safety principles.
  • Teaching a rider on the lunge.
  • Conducting a horse riding lesson.
  • Conducting an outride. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    The safety of the facility is evaluated according to the identified learning process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The suitability of the horse to the task is evaluated according to internationally accepted, humane practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The suitability and safety of the tack and equipment is assessed according to internationally accepted, humane practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The attire and protective clothing of rider and instructor meet with the internationally accepted equestrian requirements.

    Teach a rider on the lunge.

    The ride out in an enclosed area is conducted according to operational requirements.

    A group of riders is controlled according to the operational requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the Unit Standard.
