    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Receive stud horses on arrival. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Details of newly arrived horses are confirmed and recorded in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Details includes, but are not limited to:
  • Arrival form, passport, equipment, stable return, owner notification, owner details, colour, markings, brands, stallion to be sent to and mare certificate.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Identification and labelling of newly arrived horse gear is confirmed and recorded in accordance with stud farm procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Newly arrived horses are tagged and accommodated according to stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Considerations includes, but are not limited to:
  • Colour markers, halter tags, stable and paddock allocation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stud farm records are opened according to stud farm administrative procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Treat the newly arrived horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Newly arrived horses are treated for internal parasites as identified according to manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Newly arrived horses are treated for external parasites as identified according to manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Newly arrived horses are isolated after treatment according to standard industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Signs of ill health in the newly arrived horse are reported to the stud farm manager in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Information for the report includes, but is not limited to: observations, symptoms, location of pain or inflammation and vital signs.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Despatch stud horses.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Preparations for dispatch of horses are completed in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparations include, but are not limited to:
  • Identification, location and grooming.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Gear and documentation are prepared for despatch with horses in accordance with stud farm procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Assistance is provided with the loading of horses for despatch in accordance with stud farm procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the Unit Standard.

  • Powers of Seizure Regulation 468 as contained in the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.

    The qualifying learner will be able to understand and explain the following:
  • Organisational procedures and documentation for the receipt of horses.
  • Organisational procedures and documentation for the despatch of horses.
