PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is aimed at people who operate as community development workers or are involved in community development initiatives, including government, non-government, and the private sector. The Unit Standard will enable learners to understand, explain and discuss the stages of human development and how these impact on the needs of the community.

The learner who achieves this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Understanding the stages of human development in terms of the changes individuals, groups and communities go through or undergo.
  • Explaining and discussing the needs of each development stage and group.
  • Discussing the impact of these stages of human development on community needs. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication skills equivalent to NQF Level 3.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Understand the stages of human development in terms of the changes which individuals, groups and communities experience. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Stages of human development refers to pre-natal, child (babies, toddlers, young children), adolescence, adulthood (young adult, middle adult and advanced adult), etc.
  • These stages of development are informed by the theories of Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg, Freud, Maslow, Vygotsky, etc. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different stages of human development are identified and described with reference to the characteristics, challenges and needs associated with each stage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The stages of human development are identified and explained in terms of the different characteristics of each stage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The factors that influence the stages of human development are discussed in terms of how they influence and impact on each stage of development. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors include but are not limited to; biological, social, economic, environmental and, cultural influences.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The different aspects of human development for each stage are discussed in terms of how they impact on the needs of individuals, groups and communities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Effects relate to psychological, emotional, cognitive, social, physical, cultural and environmental.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Discuss the needs of each development stage for a specific community.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The factors and needs influencing each stage of development are discussed in terms of how they are currently being addressed by community initiatives and/or projects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A report is prepared and presented outlining ways to address needs relating to each human development stage for a specific community using an integrated approach. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The factors which influence community initiatives and/or projects are identified and described in terms of enabling the needs of each developmental stage to be met. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Ways to address the identified relevant needs for each developmental stage are analysed for a specific community indicating strategies that are enabling such needs to be met. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Assess and discuss the impact of the stages of human development on community needs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Factors influencing the impact of the stages of human development are identified in terms of community development initiatives and projects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Factors within a specific community are listed and discussed in terms of how they influence the developmental stages within the community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A report is prepared and presented outlining ways to address needs related to the human development stages of a specific community using an integrated approach.
