PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
In achieving this unit standard, the learner will display the competency required to operate as a coach in support of the coaching of the basic skills of competitive swimming to individuals who already mastered basic swimming and aquatic skills in order to generate interest and to encourage new entrance to swimming as a competitive sport.

In achieving this unit standard, the learner will display the competency and the skills required to coach beginners to intermediate swimmers the essential skills of the sport and prepare the individual or team for competitive swimming on a junior level. The qualifying learner may work in a school, community club or organisation, as part of a multi disciplinary team, under the supervision of a senior coach. He/she may also work on his/her own, coaching competitive swimming at beginner to intermediate level.

On achievement of this unit standard, the learner will be able to:
  • Coach the laws governing competitive swimming.
  • Identify safety requirements for competitive swimming.
  • Plan and implement practice sessions.
  • Coach the skills and conditioning of swimming.
  • Review coaching sessions. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • The unit standard-Conduct Basic Coaching To Beginners In Swimming.

    It is further assumed that learners accessing this unit standard will be competent swimmers and in possession of a first aid certificate so as to handle any emergency incidents in the coaching of swimmers for competitive swimming.

    Coach the laws governing competitive swimming. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An overview of the history of competitive swimming is provided to show understanding of the evolution of swimming as a sport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The condensed history of swimming as a competitive sport, the development of the sport, international practices of the sport, competition disciplines and distances.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The laws relating to specific swimming disciplines are described as it applies to competitive swimming. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Individual swimming, team swimming, specific strokes, rules of entry and exiting the pool when a race is conducted, professional conduct and protocol associated with competitive swimming.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of the referee as adjudicator of the laws governing competitive swimming is described in the context of fair play and ethical behaviour. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify safety requirements for competitive swimming.

    The role of the coach is explained in the context of the safety of the athletes being coached for competitive swimming. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The risks involved with the sport of swimming are identified and explained as they affect athletes involved in competitive swimming. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The legal responsibilities are explained within the context of requirements of ensuring the safety of athletes.

    Plan and implement practice sessions.

    Personal and/or team objectives for competitive swimmers are identified to ensure applicable practice.

    Resources are planned in relation to the requirements of a coaching programme.

    The principles of personal growth and development are incorporated in the coaching/practice programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A range of practice sessions are developed to enable effective conditioning and technical skills transfer associated with specific swimming styles and distances. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Different swimming styles including freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly stroke, drills and stroke development, speed development, techniques for entry, turning and breathing-timing.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Coach the skills and conditioning of swimming. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of physical conditioning for competitive swimming are explained and utilised in practice sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Warming up, cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility as applicable to propulsion and swimming strokes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate coaching methods are used to meet the needs of individuals and/or the team. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The technical skills of swimming are coached in scheduled practice sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Different swimming styles including freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly stroke, drills and stroke development, speed development, techniques for entry, turning and breathing-timing, optimal body positioning, rectification of personal styles and techniques.

    Review coaching sessions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A logbook is maintained to record conducted coaching sessions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Individual progress is evaluated and practice sessions adjusted to address personal development as per personal and/or team objectives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Records are administrated to indicate modifications of coaching sessions to the coaching plan. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements. Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
