PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners will acquire the necessary knowledge about the scope of lifesaving events and participants' level of performance to plan, implement and evaluate practice sessions for specific events. They will be able to analyse competitor performance and modify coaching to improve performance.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Explaining the scope of lifesaving coaching.
  • Planning and implementing a lifesaving training programme.
  • Coaching lifesaving techniques for specific events.
  • Conducting competitor and competition analyses.

    Explain the scope of lifesaving coaching.

    Working relationships with players and support staff are established in term of roles and responsibilities of roleplayers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Organisational protocols are explained in terms of national and international structures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The characteristics of players are analysed in terms of their ideal deployment in the team. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Psychological preparation of players to cope with on and off court situations is demonstrated according to organisational procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Plan and implement a lifesaving training programme.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A training programme for competitors' general preparation is planned and implemented in terms of coaching techniques and principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A training programme for a fresh water competitor is planned and implemented in terms of fresh water competition requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A training programme for a surf and open water competitor is planned and implemented in terms of competition requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Training programmes for pre-season, competition and recovery are planned and implemented according to competition schedules.

    Coach lifesaving techniques for specific events.

    Coaching methods are identified and explained in relation to lifesaving events. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Technical skills are identified and explained in terms of the related lifesaving event. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A programme for techniques and performance is planned according to the competitors levels of conditioning and performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Lifesaving techniques are coached according to the developed programme and targeted level of performance. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Conduct competitor and competition analyses.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The performance of the individual competitors is analysed in relation to targeted level of performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The performance of the lifesaving team is analysed in relation to targeted level of performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Training programmes are modified in terms of individual and team performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Feedback on individual and team performance is provided to all roleplayers in relation to future competitions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the Unit Standard.
