PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Individuals found competent in this unit standard will be able to operate as a sailing coach or instructor of the skills of sailing to individuals including adults and children wishing to acquire basic to intermediate levels of sailing competency. The qualifying individual will be able to use own sailing knowledge and competency to explain and instruct the skills of sailing and navigation as well as the techniques and manoeuvres of the sport, in particular as it relates to dinghy, catamaran, keelboat and windsurfing on club and competitive level both inland and/or offshore.

Individuals qualifying against this unit standard will be able to operate independently and provide supervision to assistant coaches and will apply the teaching of sailing skills to individuals or groups on shore or on the water, from a support boat or as part of the crew.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Explain the rules governing the sport of sailing.
  • Demonstrate the techniques of sailing.
  • Prepare and implement sailing practice sessions.
  • Assess risk as it applies to safety in the sailing environment.
  • Evaluate coach performance and record keeping. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Individuals accessing this unit standard are at minimum qualified at the South African Sailboat (SAS) National Sailing Scheme on NQF Level 4 for dinghy, catamaran or keelboat sailing. It is further assumed that learners accessing this unit standard will be competent swimmers and in possession of a first aid certificate so as to handle any emergency incidents in the coaching of the sport of sailing.

    Explain the rules governing the sport of sailing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The sailing coaches code of conduct and the consequences of breach is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The rules governing the sport are explained within the context of competitive and recreational sailing. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sailing theory, rules of the road, rules of sailing and sportsmanship, sailing terminology, national Federation and International Federation requirements, SAMSA.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The rules of sailing are utilised in the coaching of sailing techniques and manoeuvres. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate the techniques of sailing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of navigation are demonstrated in the handling of a sailing vessel. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principles of navigation as it applies to the type of vessel used in an inland or offshore environment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The techniques of sailing are demonstrated for a range of sailing manoeuvres. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including launching, tacking, jibing, slow sailing, sailing in circles around a buoy, heaving to, and reefing the main while under way sail handling, anchoring, rigging, ropework.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Rescue techniques are demonstrated as it applies to possible emergency situations in the sailing environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Watermanship, capsize recovery, man-overboard recovery, assisting sailors in distress.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Assess risk as it applies to safety in the sailing environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Risk assessment is conducted for the current and forecasted conditions of the coaching environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Wind strength and direction, sea state, visibility, tide times, session times, numbers and types of boats involved, swimming skills of participants.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The experience of participants are evaluated to assess risk applicable to sailing conditions expected during practice sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Experience of instructors, capabilities of learners, sailing areas planned to be used in the coaching session, levels of shore side and afloat support including communication links and the ability to summon assistance if required, other on-water activities including racing, training and intentions, traffic volumes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment utilised for the coaching of sailing is maintained to ensue the safety of individuals. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment includes but is not limited to: Vessel buoyancy, equipment on vessels, safety and rescue equipment and equipment inspections.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate action is taken to minimise risk for participants involved in sailing activities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Participants and instructors warned. Sails reefed, reduction of number of boats, restriction of novice participation, sheltered areas used for sailing instruction, additional safety cover organized, adjusted practice session times.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Prepare and implement sailing practice sessions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The personal objectives of participants as well as principles of the enjoyment of the sport are utilised in the planning of sailing practice sessions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lesson plans are developed and adjusted to provide relevant drills and the inclusion of coaching objectives according to individual needs and competency levels. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Lesson plans to incorporate activities for manoeuvre drills, good resources utilisation, time allocation, emergency plans for sailing conditions, breaks for recovery and hydration, different teaching options including from a coach boat and as part of the crew.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Practical sailing skills of participants are evaluated to detect and correct tactical and technical sailing manoeuvres. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Sailing techniques are coached according to scheduled practice sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including leaving the dock (sailing backwards), tacking, jibing, person-overboard retrieval, anchoring, capsize recovery, and slow sailing, sailing in circles around a buoy, heaving to, and reefing the main while under way sail handling, sailing techniques and manoeuvres, risk assessment (weather conditions).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Incorrect sailing techniques observed are dealt with through the application of coaching techniques. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Observing and correcting of errors, observing of vantage points, identification of causes of errors, correction through explanation and demonstration, feedback and two-way communication.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Coaching administration is concluded to record progress, skills progression and the adjusting of practice sessions.

    Evaluate coach performance and record keeping.

    Own use and application of instruction methods is evaluated.

    Performance in relation to the maintaining of safety is evaluated.

    Administration is completed to enable the recording and assessment of personal progress within the coaching environment.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements. Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
