PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
In achieving this unit standard, the learner will display the competency required to operate as assistant coach in support of the coaching of the basic skills of Judo to individuals participating in the sport to generate interest and to encourage new entrants. The qualifying learner will be able to explain the basis components of Judo, showing understanding of the principles of the sport and be able to demonstrate the skills and techniques required by beginners to the sport of Judo.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Describe the origins and development of Judo as a sport.
  • Explain the safety requirements of Judo.
  • Explain the laws governing the sport of Judo.
  • Plan and write up lesson plans.
  • Conduct Judo coaching activities for beginners. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.

    It is further assumed that learners accessing this unit standard will be in possession of a blue belt grading in Judo as to enable the inferring of competencies associated with experience in the sport of Judo. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The leaner will be able to work with some level of supervision and requires a blue belt grading in the sport in order to teach beginners the elements of Judo associated with grading ranging from yellow to blue belt.
  • Where applicable, range statements have been included under individual specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

    Describe the evolution Judo as a sport.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An overview of the history of Judo is provided to show understanding of its origins and growth. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Condensed history of the sport, the development of the sport, the principles of the sport in comparison with other commonly known martial arts disciplines, international practices and development of the sport.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The sport of Judo is explained in terms of the benefits of the sport to its participants. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Individual discipline, self-defence, generally accepted behaviour in terms of respect, discipline and self-discipline.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The impact of the coach is described in relation to Judokas. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

    Explain the safety requirements of Judo. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role of the coach is explained as it pertaining to safety in the sport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Individual contact, avoiding of personal injury, importance of effective learner supervision, correct warming up and preparation, use of correct equipment and facilities.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The principles of safety in Judo are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The interventions and equipment needed for preventative and remedial actions of safety during participation are described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Importance of correct technical instruction, safety precautions in the practicing of techniques/elements under supervision.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain the laws governing the sport of Judo.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of understanding the basic rules applicable to Judo is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The laws of Judo are explained to ensure fair play and understanding of the principles of the sport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Basic laws:
  • Etiquette on the mat, initiation and dismissal protocol, correct terminology, laws pertaining to elements of Judo as a high impact, contact sport including yielding.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The official signals and control requirements applicable to role of the coach are explained as it relates to the sport. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Plan and write up lesson plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The objectives of Judo coaching sessions are listed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Coaching session plans is restricted to elements and techniques associated with athletes between yellow and blue belt grading in the sport.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Resources are planned according to coaching session requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The scheduling of activities is listed to ensure time management of coaching sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Activities should include warming up and cool down requirements for a Judo class, technical transfer of elements associated with Judo as is applicable to the level of grade coached.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A basic lesson plan is written to conduct a coaching session.

    Conduct Judo coaching activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Judo terminology is explained on a level suitable to beginners in the sport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The core skills of Judo are explained and taught to beginners of the sport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Techniques should be applicable to the level of Judoka coached and is restricted from yellow to blue belt grading including grips, blocks, sweeps, throws, correct and safe landing techniques.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Warm up and cool down techniques are demonstrated to prepare for the sport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The basic conditioning requirements are explained as they apply to beginner Judokas. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Appropriate teaching and coaching methods are used to meet the needs of the athlete being coached. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Listening skills, communication feedback, teaching styles, instructional styles.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A logbook is maintained to record conducted coaching sessions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
