PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is designed to provide the learners with knowledge and understanding of commonalities and basic skills of all disciplines at beginner level. This Unit Standard is for learners who wish to advance their coaching training at beginner level in their specific discipline of Gymnastics.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Managing a gymnastics club.
  • Designing and adapting a training programme for appropriate level and age group.
  • Applying basic sport science principles and methods of training.
  • Applying positive philosophy of coaching.
  • Coaching beginner level gymnastics skills.
  • Ensuring a safe and secure coaching environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication skills at NQF Level 3.
  • First Aid at NQF Level 2.
  • Entry level Gymnastics Judge.

    Manage a gymnastics club. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The establishment of a gymnastics club is explained within the framework of South African Gymnastic Federation's (SAGF's) rules and regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Codes of conduct, rules, registrations and ethics are applied in accordance with SAGF constitution. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Annual gymnastics calendar and activity schedules are planned in terms of the objectives and audience needs of the club. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Audience needs include, but is not limited to:
  • Mental, social, economical and special needs of individuals.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The establishment of internal and external communication channels are explained in terms of the objectives of the club.

    Gymnastics Programs are implemented at club level using gymnastics disciplines.

    The differences between coaching children and adolescents are explained in terms of growth and development.

    Dominant Movement Patterns are explained in terms of gymnastics coaching.

    Basic biomechanical principles is explained in relation to the principles of Dominant Movement Patterns. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The training programme is planned and modified according to the target age group and ability.

    Physical needs of gymnastics are identified and explained in terms of ensuring and improving fitness levels.

    Aesthetic needs of gymnastics are identified and explained in terms of improving movement in ballet and dance.

    Basic Anatomy and Physiology is explained in relation to movements of the human body.

    Methods of training are applied in relation to the condition and ability of the gymnast.

    Logbooks of gymnasts and coaches are maintained according to SAGF quality management system.

    Positive coaching behaviours are applied according to the SAGF code of conduct.

    Qualities of an effective coach are demonstrated according to established coaching practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Responsibilities of coaches are explained in terms of SAGF code of conduct.

    The technique to execute gymnastic movements is explained and demonstrated according to established coaching practice.

    The preparations steps for each gymnastic movement are explained and demonstrated according to established coaching practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Connection possibilities are identified and demonstrated according to established coaching practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Common errors are detected and corrected according to established coaching practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Spotting techniques for different movements are demonstrated according to established coaching practice.

    Ensure a safe and secure coaching environment.

    Indemnity forms are completed and filed according to the SAGF QMS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety requirements during coaching/competitions is explained and applied according to SAGF QMS.

    Safety requirements include, but are not limited to:
  • Facilities, equipment and attire.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Class activities are coordinated in terms of the safety requirements and lesson plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Procedures for the prevention and treatment of injury is applied according the organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Existing injuries and illnesses are monitored and recorded according to organisational requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
