PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Individuals accessing this unit standard will display an advanced level of technical and tactical application in the sport of Judo. In achieving this unit standard, the learner will display the competency required to provide coaching on provincial level in support of the coaching of the skills of Judo to a range of graded Judokas up to 2nd Dan graded athletes.

The qualifying learner will be able to coach the tactical and technical elements of Judo, both in terms of its competitive and grading components, showing in depth understanding of the principles of the sport and be able to demonstrate the skills and techniques required by participants at provincial level in the sport.

In addition, the competencies gained will enable coaching specialisation in terms of the coaching of Judo kata's for purposes of individual grading in the sport and individual coaching for purposes of competitive involvement in the sport.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Utilise a variety of coaching techniques to enhance tactical and technical skills for the sport of Judo.
  • Plan Judo coaching sessions.
  • Coach Judo to intermediate and advanced level participants in the sport.
  • Reflect on coaching performance. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • The unit standard: "Conduct Judo Coaching on Club Level".

    It is further assumed that learners accessing this unit standard will be in possession of a 2nd Dan grading in Judo as to enable the inferring of competencies associated with experience in the sport of Judo. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The leaner will be able to work independently and requires a 2nd Dan black belt grading in the sport in order to transfer the skills and competencies associated with grading ranging from yellow belt to 1st Dan graded participants.

    Coaching objectives are identified as they apply to tactical and technical skills requirements of Judo. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Objectives could relate to competitive and/or grading preparation and conditioning.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different coaching techniques are used to reinforce the tactical and technical skills of the sport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Goal setting is used as a technique to support individual and team coaching and preparation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Mental conditioning techniques are used to support the coaching of tactical and technical skills in the sport of Judo. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Principles of biomechanics are used to support the physical conditioning of participants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Feedback techniques are utilised to motivate individuals and the team.

  • Verbal communication including voice projection and use of correct terminology of the sport, non-verbal communication as applicable to the sport.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tactical and technical objectives of Judo are developed in relation to individual and team development objectives. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tactical and technical objectives can relate both to the competitive and/or grading preparation of athletes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An annual coaching plan incorporating scheduled lesson plans and objectives is drafted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Resources requirements are identified and planned for Judo coaching sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For resources planning includes but is not limited to:
  • Equipment, facilities, administration, analysis sheets. Coaching sessions could also include competition and/or grading coaching.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Principles of personal growth and development are included in the planning of a practice programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A range of conditioning practice sessions for the meeting of tactical and technical coaching objectives are developed for intermediate to advanced level Judokas. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Different techniques, instructional methods for conditioning as is required for an annual plan including grading and/or competition preparation on provincial level.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Safety requirements are identified to ensure injury prevention during practice sessions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Coach Judo to intermediate and advanced level participants in the sport.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The laws of the game are taught from a tactical and technical perspective. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to: scoring, ethics, etiquette, as it applies to competitions and/or grading as well as the training environment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety requirements are listed in the coaching of Judo. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For safety requirements includes but is not limited to:
  • Transfer of skills and techniques, the correction and application of techniques, conditioning during practice sessions including-grips, blocks, throws, falls.
  • Personal conduct of Judokas, fair play versus dangerous play, general occupational health and safety as it applies to the environment in which coaching takes place, individual and group safety, maintaining of individual and club discipline.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Coaching methods are utilised for individual and team conditioning. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For conditioning includes but is not limited to: techniques aimed at the correction and/or affirmation of tactical and technical skills up to 2nd Dan, fitness, cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, suppleness.

    Individual progress and performance of participants in coaching sessions are analysed and the correction and reinforcement of technical and tactical skills are identified and implemented.

    For individual progress and performance includes but is not limited to:
  • Grading, competition, personal objectives, preparation for high performance competition, motivation, leadership skills, club and team objectives and performance.

    The use and application of a variety of coaching and conditioning techniques are used to meet individual and team objectives.

    Coaching records are concluded to record coaching sessions and modifications to coaching plans.

    Recording of coaching sessions conducted as well as adjustments to coaching and practice sessions in order to meet individual and/or team objectives and requirements.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
