PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals that are involved in or are envisaging involvement in the coaching of tennis to players functioning on intermediate or advanced level. Individuals qualifying against this unit standard will be able to operate as advanced tennis instructors with the ability to instruct and refine the tactical and technical skills of young as well as adult tennis players.

The coaching skills obtained will enable individuals to further the standard of players to the highest school/club level and guide them towards provincial/regional level of participation in the game. Participants in the sport on this level could include youth, adults and individuals with disabilities involved in wheelchair tennis.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Utilise a variety of coaching techniques to enhance tactical and technical game skills.
  • Plan tennis practice sessions.
  • Coach tennis to intermediate and advanced level players of the game.
  • Reflect on coaching performance. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • The unit standard-Conduct Basic Coaching To Beginners In Tennis at NQF Level 3.

    It is further assumed that learners accessing this unit standard are familiar with and are actively involved in the game of tennis.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Coaching objectives are identified as it applies to tactical and technical skills requirements of players. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different coaching techniques are utilised for the reinforcement of tactical and technical skills of the game. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For techniques includes but is not limited to:
  • Formats-team, rotation, group, challenge and competitive formats, tactical drills, feeding, correctional and reinforcement techniques, physical conditioning for tennis and movement, specific methodologies relevant to intermediate and advanced level play.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Goal setting is applied as a techniques in support of tournament preparation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Mental conditioning techniques are utilised to support the coaching of tactical and technical skills. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Principles of biomechanics are applied in support of physical conditioning of players of the game. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Feedback techniques are applied in support of coaching and player motivation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tactical and technical objectives of tennis are determined as they apply to practice sessions for a range of applications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Applications includes but is not limited to:
  • Recreational application of the game, competitive/tournament participation, individual and doubles games, doubles for tournament players, female tennis players.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Resources requirements are planned for tennis practice sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Resources planning includes but is not limited to:
  • Equipment, facilities, administration, analysis sheets.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Principles of personal growth and development are included in the planning of a practice programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Lesson plans are concluded to meet tactical and technical coaching objectives for preparation on competitive level. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safety requirements are identified in the planning of coaching sessions to enable injury prevention during practice sessions.

    Coach tennis to intermediate and advanced level players of the game. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The use and application of a game strategy is enhanced through the coaching of tactical requirements as it applies to the game of tennis. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For tactical aspects includes but is not limited to:
  • Consistency, moving the opponent, maintaining a good court position, using individual strengths in the game, exploiting opponent weakness, recovery positioning, phases of play, zones of play, shot selection.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Technical skills of players are developed as it applies to the three main game situations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For game situations includes:
  • Serve and return, baseline rally and approach, pass.

    For technical skills includes but is not limited to:
  • Serves-underarm, overarm, rally-groundstrokes including return, volleys, progressions, receiving and sending skills, score, specific strokes-forehand, backhand, single handed backhand, double handed backhand, smash, lob, and dropshot, the five ball control techniques, visual preparation for the game.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The laws of the game are coached for application on intermediate and advanced level. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Player performance is analysed and the correction and reinforcement of technical skills are incorporated into coaching sessions according to identified intervention needs and requirements.

    Reflect on coaching performance.

    Own coaching performance is evaluated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Own application of the code of ethics for tennis coaches is evaluated.

  • Coaching role, maintaining of healthy sport and competitive principles such as fair-play, positive motivation, balance between competition and enjoyment of the game, self-discipline, maintaining the laws of the game.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Player preparation for tournament participation is evaluated in terms of individual and team performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The use and application of a variety of coaching techniques are evaluated in terms of player development and the meeting of individual and team objectives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Records are concluded to record adjustments to coaching plans and practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A logbook is maintained to record conducted coaching sessions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
