PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will be able to implement fundamental gymnastics program at introductory level. The learner will be able to work unsupervised at community, club and institution level with different age groups and could also work under the supervision of a senior coach as part of a multi-discipline program.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Describing the development and sociological impact of gymnastics.
  • Establishing and maintaining a safe and conducive environment for gymnastics.
  • Implementing a physical preparation programme for different age groups.
  • Demonstrating dominant movement patterns (DMPs).
  • Coaching and assessing basic skills in gymnastics.
  • Introducing gymnastic disciplines.

    Describe the development and sociological impact of gymnastics.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The current format of gymnastics is described in relation to the origin and historical development. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The structure of the South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF) is described in terms of its roles and responsibilities to South African Communities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The roles of stakeholders are described in terms of the way in which they introduce and advance gymnastics in a community. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stakeholders include, but not limited to: School teachers, principals, gymnasts, officials, leaders in the community and the provincial gymnastics association and governing body of other institutions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The "gymnastics for all" approach to gymnastics development is explained in relation to transformation and mass participation.

    Methods of teaching fundamental skills are demonstrated according to standard practice.

    Common faults and related corrective measures are explained using examples.

    The use of teaching aids and safe spotting techniques are demonstrated according to standard practice.

    Disciplines of gymnastics are described in relation to their characteristics and features. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Disciplines include, but are not limited to:
  • Rhythmic gymnastics, artistic men/women gymnastics, aerobic gymastics, tumbling, acrobatic gymnastics, trampolining, rope skipping and gymnastics for all.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A lesson plan is compiled in relation to the teaching methods and techniques for the respective disciplines and modified programs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Principles of short, medium and long term planning is identified and applied to the planning process. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principles includes, but is not limited to:
  • Games, sequences, display elements and combining music and movements.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Activities that are designed and adopted for different needs for fundamental development are implemented and facilitated in fun-filled and enjoyable sessions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
