PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners who participate as umpires to control and manage a tennis game and the players where the acquisition of competence against this unit standard will add value to one's job and capabilities and an insight into the tennis laws.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of tennis laws.
  • Explaining duties and responsibilities for tennis officials.
  • Control arising situations in the tennis court.
  • Handle score and disputes.

    It is assumed that the learner is competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Tennis laws refer to laws in terms of the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrating an understanding of tennis laws. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An understanding of the origin and history of tennis is demonstrated in relation to the international and South African contexts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose and philosophy of officiating a tennis tournament is explained within the context of the roles and responsibilities of an umpiring a netball game. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Laws governing a tennis match are explained in terms of question of law and the question of fact. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Procedures for matches played without a chair umpire are explained within context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Procedures on appeals by players are explained within context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Procedures to allow medical evaluation for players are explained in order to determine the condition of the player. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Procedures for suspension and postponement of the game are explained within context.

    Explain the duties and responsibilities for tennis officials. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Tennis officials refer to chief umpire, chair umpire, line umpire and supervisor/referee. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The roles and responsibilities of tennis officials are identified and explained in terms of ITF prescriptions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Code of Conduct is explained and applied in order to improve the standard of professionalism. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Pre-tournament planning is conducted in accordance with tennis procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Control the tennis match. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Status of the play is given using verbal calls to provide the responsible umpires a loud and clear message. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hand signals are used in order to effectively communicate with the chair umpire. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Conditions under which a match is played are assessed in order to decide on the suspension or postponement of the match. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Different positions of umpires are identified and described in terms of movements during the point. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Handle score and disputes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Score sheets are marked in accordance with the requirements of ITF regulations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Regulations refer to but are not limited to pre-match, toss, time/interruptions, sides for serve, ball change, points, games, code and time of violations and statement.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A report is compiled in terms of standard form used in the sector. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Documents are completed correctly and handed over to statics office and media. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.
  • Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.

    Integrated Assessment:

    When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment. It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together in an integrated way, thus reducing the overall number of assessments and ensuring that commonalities that exist between a number of unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.
