PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The disposal of waste constitutes an integral aspect of waste management which is an important part of environmental management. The disposal of waste is one of the key functions of a learner who embarks on a specialisation stream in waste management. The learner will be able to explain the terminology and principles pertaining to the disposal of waste, discuss the regulatory requirements and potential impacts related to the disposal of waste.

    The activities related to waste disposal are described in a manner that illustrates the importance of each of these aspects in the waste management sector.

    The methods of waste disposal are determined and an appropriate option is selected in terms of financial viability
    acording to suitability to the option selected.

    Option refers to the Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO) as defined in National Environmental Management Act (NEMA).

    The most appropriate means of transport is identified and used according to suitability to the option selected.

    Recommendations are made to meet expected standards and corrective action is taken to ensure adequate health and safety.

    Includes but is not limited to general, hazardous, inorganic, oily, putrescible organic, high volume/low hazard, problem waste.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The types of landfills are identified and described in terms of the conditions under which each type would be most suitable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of monitoring facilities at landfill sites is explained to identify potential environmental hazards that will provide a comprehensive picture of the challenges in the environmental sector. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The concept of leachate is explained in terms of its implications for environmental management. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Factors that affect the water balance at various sites are identified and explained in terms of the actions that can be taken. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The environmental consequences of the potential impacts are explained in terms of the possible damage that could be caused and the costs involved. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The manner in which consequences can be prevented, controlled or mitigated is explained and appropriate pre-emptive measures applied to maintain health and safety. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.
