PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Knowledge of the generation of waste and primary storage constitutes an integral aspect of the waste management specialisation stream. The learner will be equipped with the knowledge of different ways in which waste is generated and stored. The learner will also be able to explain the terminology and principles pertaining to waste generation and primary storage, discuss the regulatory requirements and potential impacts related to waste generation and primary storage.

Learners credited with this standard will be capable of:
  • Explaining the terminology and principles of waste generation and primary storage.
  • Explaining the activities and resources related to generation and primary storage.
  • Applying regulatory requirements and performance standards for generation and primary storage of waste.

    Types includes but is not limited to putrescible material like used oil or tyres.

    The storage options available are identified and described to ensure the feasibility of the exercise.

    Option refers to the best practicable environmental option (BPEO) as defined in the National Environment Management Act (NEMA).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The relevant legislation pertaining to generation and storage of waste is identified and explained in terms of relevant controls for health and safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Legislation includes but is not limited to the Health Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Mines Health and Safety Act, by-laws, SANS codes, government guidelines.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The applicable performance standards are identified and described to indicate national targets.

    Standards includes but is not limited to minimum requirements, and guideline documents.

    The manner in which consequences can be prevented, controlled or mitigated is explained and appropriate pre-emptive measures are identified that could be used to maintain health and safety.
