PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this standard is to provide the learner with a broad overview of the biophysical environment, which includes the main concepts, characteristics and challenges, especially within the South African context. In addition, the learner will acquire the competencies to understand the impact of human living on the environment and the aspect of human vulnerability.

  • Explaining biodiversity and its related aspects.
  • Exploring the inter-relationships between the components and the systems.
  • Describing the challenges to the biophysical environment of South Africa.

    The threats to biodiversity in South Africa are explored and the mechanisms developed to counter them are explained as part of the strategy to protect the environment.

    The manner in which biodiversity targets for different regions are set is explained in a manner that emphasises the importance of monitoring and conserving the country's biodiversity.

    The challenges to the biophysical environment are explained in terms of their causes and effects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The impact of the interventions made to counter these challenges are described and evaluated to indicate the importance of appropriate and timeous interventions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Principles which guide South Africa's responses to these challenges are identified and explained in a manner that is effective in creating awareness of the principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Aspects of climatology and meteorology are explained in terms of their influence on the biophysical environment.

    Identify and explain environmental features on maps.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Maps are interpreted according to the information portrayed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Information portrayed includes using scale, lines of longitude and latitude, north, true north, magnetic north, bearing.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information indicated by certain aspects on the map is interpreted as intended by the map maker.

    Aspects include contours, isotopes, etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Bio-physical features, landforms and development features indicated on the map are identified and interpreted in accordance with their original intent. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Aspects of maps that relate directly to environmental issues are explained in terms of the importance of maps in the work of an environment officer. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.
