PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is aimed at people who operate as community development workers or are involved in community development initiatives, including government, non-government, and the private sector. The Unit Standard will enable learners to achieve the necessary knowledge and skills in order to drive community participation from an active citizenship perspective by incorporating human rights principles.

The learner who achieves this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Describing ways to promote community participation.
  • Explaining the relationship between human rights and community participation.
  • Developing a plan to promote active citizenship and community participation.

    Mechanisms and processes that promote participation are identified and related to the community context.

    Key current and historical events demonstrating active citizenship are discussed with relevant examples of good practice in order to provide role models and lessons learnt.

    Ways to encourage active citizenship are identified and described for a specific community context.

    A plan is developed outlining ways to promote participation and active citizenship for a specific community project.
