PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is aimed at people who operate as community development workers or are involved in community development initiatives, including government, non-government, and the private sector. The Unit Standard will enable learners to understand and work within the social dynamics of a community. The learner will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to enable him/her to develop and maintain relationships and work with members of a community, as well as with the social structures of a community. The competencies achieved will also enable learners to deal with diversity issues and promote inclusivity in a community.

The learner who achieves this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Explaining the role and impact of social structures and relationships on community development.
  • Explaining the influence of social dynamics on community development work.
  • Investigating the role and impact of diversity on community development.

    Explain the role and impact of social structures and relationships on community development. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different individuals and groups that make up communities are identified and described in terms of their role and influence on community development dynamics. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Groups include but are not limited to young, aged, civil society, religious groupings and traditional leaders.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The impact of the micro and macro environment on a community is explained in terms of influences on social relationships. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Micro includes but is not limited to individuals, groups, families, community organisations, schools, clubs, sports centres, entertainment centres, shopping areas, religious centres, transport hubs and local businesses.
  • Macro includes but is not limited to non-governmental organisations, government structures, broader community and economic influences.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Community organisations, political and government structures and civil society structures are contrasted in terms of their differences in a specific community in order to understand the role and nature of social structures in a community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The relationships between government, non-government and community structures are explained in terms of the influence of power dynamics and how this impacts on community interactions.

    The need to work with formal and informal social structures in community development work is explained in terms of mutual benefits to the organisation and the community.

    Explain the impact of social dynamics within the context of community development.

    The concept of social dynamics is explained in terms of a community development context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The concepts of power and power relations are explained in terms of how these can be utilised and dealt with in order to achieve positive results in terms of community development. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The influence of social dynamics in a specific community is explored with reference to a community development initiative or project. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact of power relationships on the broader community is described within a specific community in terms of the various role players affecting community development. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Power relationships includes but is not limited to formal structures, informal structures, traditional leaders, family, male and female groupings or individuals.
  • Broader community includes but is not limited to services, sectors and geographical location.

    Factors influencing the promotion of unity in diversity are explained in terms of their impact on community dynamics in a specific context.

    Ways to promote co-operation in a diverse community are identified and described for a specific community development project. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Possible ways of celebrating a community's diversity are listed and presented as a way to highlight commonalities and acknowledge differences in order to promote social cohesion.
