PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Apply the health and safety regulations that are relevant to horticultural activities.
  • Perform the necessary health and safety checks on the infrastructure and equipment.
  • Ensure that hazardous chemicals are safely handled and stored.
  • Inspect and verify the standards of the housekeeping practices in the work areas and stores.
  • Convene safety meetings to evaluate and improve all aspects of health and safety.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the legislative provisions that regulate health and safety in the horticultural environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles and objectives of the OHS Act are explained within the context of the horticultural environment according to the OHS Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The employer's responsibility to create and maintain a safe working environment is explained in accordance with the relevant provisions of the OHS Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The personal protective clothing items that must be issued to the workers are described and the frequency in which these must be inspected/replaced is explained in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The personal protective equipment that workers require to execute their work safely is listed and the frequency in which these must be inspected is explained in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The necessity of providing a chemical store that is suitable for the safe storage of the various chemicals used in the workplace is explained in terms of the particular storage requirements for each of these. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The various instructional and warning signage that is required in the workplace are described in terms of their relevance to the particular hazards that may be encountered and the positioning that is required to maximise their visibility. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The provision of health and safety training for horticultural staff is explained in terms of the frequency of the training and the particular safety aspects that need to be covered. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The requirements for the appointment of safety representatives are explained and the benefits of conducting regular safety meetings are explained in respect of minimising safety incidents. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    The first aid materials and equipment that must be kept in the first aid kit are described and the frequency in which these must be inspected/replaced is explained in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 10 
    The emergency drills and workplace evacuation procedures are described and the frequency in which these must be practiced is explained in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify the potential hazards that may be found in the workplace and the safety checks that must be performed to minimise safety incidents.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The injuries that may occur from the use of defective personal protective equipment are described and the specific safety checks that each item must undergo are explained in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The safety hazards that may occur when operating electrically powered equipment are identified and the safety checks that must be conducted are described in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The safety hazards that may occur when operating horticultural maintenance machinery are identified and the safety checks that must be conducted are explained in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The injuries that may occur when operating a tractor are described and the specific safety checks that must be conducted are explained in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The function of an earth leakage unit is described and the importance of regularly testing these units and all the outlets and light switches that operate from the earth leakage unit are explained in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify the possible safety risks that hazardous chemicals pose and the precautionary checks that have to be conducted to prevent these. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The possible injuries and damage that may occur when using petrol and inflammable materials are listed and the correct handling practices to prevent these are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The heath risks that pesticides and herbicides pose to people and the environment are described and the procedures to monitor the correct handling and storage practices to minimise safety incidents are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The objectives of good housekeeping in a fuel storage facility are explained and the procedures to monitor the safe handling of petrol and petrol mixes in the storage environment are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The potential hazards that may occur when fertilisers are incorrectly stored are described and the procedures to manage the safe storage of the various types of fertilisers are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Monitor the standards of housekeeping in the workplace.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The areas in a horticultural workplace where good housekeeping practices are required are described and the frequency of inspections is explained in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The role of housekeeping inspections is explained in terms of maintaining standards and the aspects of safety that are negatively affected by poor housekeeping are listed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The standards of housekeeping for the various workplaces and storage areas are described in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The documentation that is required for recording housekeeping inspections, are described in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Conduct safety meetings with staff and complete all necessary documentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The functions of a safety representative within a horticultural team are explained in terms of their responsibilities for arranging and conducting the safety meetings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The meeting procedures and the standard agenda items for discussion are described in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The necessity of providing feedback on the results of recent safety inspections is explained within the context of implementing the subsequent corrective actions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The objectives of presenting safety statistics at a meeting are explained in terms of the positive affects that creating an awareness of the current status can have on the achievement of these goals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The benefits of enlisting staff participation in safety awareness are explained in terms of the identification of potential hazards in the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The documentation that is required for recording all safety related activities is described in accordance with the company's procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
