In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
People credited with this unit are able to differentiate between the various structural materials to identify the most effective application.

Accordingly, competent persons against this unit standards are able to:
  • Identify the material as per design specification.
  • Identify the materials that can optimise the design.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Recognition of Prior Learning:

Persons who are able to demonstrate workplace experience comparable or equivalent to the competence requirements of the unit standard will be given credit, in line with assessment processes.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Identify structural materials as per design specification.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Different types of materials are identified for a given design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Required material use is identified from a given design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Quantities of materials required are determined for a given design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The grade and quality of structural material required is determined to suit given design requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The consequences of using different grade and quality structural materials is described in terms of cost and structural integrity.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Different grade and quality includes both higher and lower specifications.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Identify materials that can optimise the design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Material selected is confirmed to meet design specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Alternative materials that could perform the same function are identified and contrasted to the original design in terms of cost and durability.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The design is checked for optimisation of expense in accordance with design criteria and client requirements.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge considered critical to the successful achievement of this unit is covered in the specific outcomes and assessment criteria. This includes:
  • Identifying different types of structural materials.
  • Knowing the use of the different types of structural materials.
  • Measuring quantities of materials.
  • The consequences of using different grades of materials.
  • How to interpret design specifications.
  • How to optimise a design.

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
Identify material to be used in the design.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
Work effectively with others and in teams when optimising a design.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING
Organise and manage oneself and one`s activities responsibly and effectively when calculating material quantities.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect relevant information to determine what other materials could be used to achieve a particular design requirement.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and/or language skills.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
Understand the world as a set of inter-related parts of a system in determining the impact of using alternative materials.

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA
To register as an assessor, an applicant needs:
  • Detailed documentary proof of educational qualification, practical training undergone, and experience gained by the applicant (Portfolio of Evidence).
  • A recognised assessor qualification.

In particular, assessors should assess that the learner demonstrates an ability to consider a range of options by:
  • Measuring the quality of the observed practical performance as well as the theory and underpinning knowledge.
  • Using methods that are varied to allow the learner to display thinking and decision making in the demonstration of practical performance.
  • Maintaining a balance between practical performance and theoretical assessment methods to ensure each is measured in accordance with the level of the qualification.
  • Taking into account that the relationship between practical and theoretical is not fixed but varies according to the type and level of qualification.

  • REREGISTRATION HISTORY
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES
The Outcomes that Learners achieve will be judged subject to these being achieved:
  • Within the standard time prescribed by the organisation.
  • Strictly according to the organisation`s work place procedures.

    Values:
  • The use of tasks and materials in the learning event plan should not discriminate against learners on any grounds prescribed in the Bill of Rights and Employment Equity Act and should promote the orientations outlined in the critical cross-field outcomes.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
