PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to perform routine maintenance on Saw shop machines and tools in a Lumber Mill.

  • Explain the routine maintenance/lubrication programme prescribed for the Saw Doctor shop facilities in the Lumber Mill.
  • Describe the tools and materials, and their functions, used for the routine maintenance/lubrication programme of the Saw Doctor shop facilities.
  • Perform the routine maintenance/lubrication programme for the Saw Doctor shop facilities.

    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Mathematical Literacy and Communication at ABET Level 3 or equivalent. Understanding of basic activities of the Lumber Milling process, and of the activities performed in the Saw Doctor Shop.

    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment including equipment, tools and instruments that can be described as the Saw Doctor Shop in the Lumber Mill.
  • All the personnel involved in all the activities in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All the material that is handled and used in this work area, including maintenance and lubrication materials and aids.
  • All the relevant work procedures and safety, health and environmental management requirements relating to the Saw Doctor Shop.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 1 in Saw Doctoring and specifically to perform routine maintenance on Saw Shop machines and tools.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. NQF Level 1, is appropriate because:
  • For foundational competence the Learner has to demonstrate the use of recall and elementary comprehension skills.
  • For practical competence the Learner has to operate in closely defined contexts under close supervision.

    Describe the tools and materials, and their functions as used for the routine maintenance/ lubrication programme of the Saw Doctor shop facilities.

    The stores and inventory procedures of maintenance/lubrication of tools and equipment in the Saw Doctor shop are explained according to standard operating procedures.

    The necessary documentation to be completed during maintenance practices is explained according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Maintenance are explained in relation to reporting protocol according to standard to worksite procedures.

    Perform the routine maintenance/lubrication programme for the Saw Doctor shop facilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All saw and cutter maintenance facilities are operated according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools and equipment are maintained and lubricated according company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The necessary steps are taken to fix loose parts according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The necessary documentation is completed to complete the maintenance and lubrication process according to standard operating procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
