PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The scope of this Unit Standard covers the whole environment, which can be described as the log yard of a Lumber Mill. All personnel involved in the activities of this work area, i.e. the log yard are expected to show competency in this area. This Unit Standard will also assist them to enlarge their scope of knowledge by exposing them to the quality of material handled and processed in the relevant work areas of the log yard. In this instance, they will be better positioned to determine the raw, processed, reject and waste types of materials.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Explain correctly the purpose of the log yard and know the sequence of activities, basic workings of the equipment used, understand the concept of log quality and know the factors determining this.
  • Assist with setting up and operating the logyard of a Lumber Mill.
  • Perform these to the standards prescribed for this level.

    Techniques to be used when sorting and storing logs according to organisational operating standards is explained.

    Keep records of logs received at and processed in the log yard (log tallying).

    The process of feeding logs into the Wet Mill appropriately is defined according to company operating standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct use of prescribed and operating techniques and procedures for feeding sorted, debarked logs into the Wet Mill is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Precautionary steps to be taken when operating in the Wet Mill facilities are described in terms of company procedures and international best practice. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Logs are correctly recorded as they are received in the Wet Mill.

    Logs received in the Wet Mill are recorded correctly in terms of company operating procedures.

    The recording of logs received in the Wet Mill are in line with organisational quality standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Feed sorted debarked logs into the Wet Mill in accordance with planned Wet Mill material requirements.

    The process of debarking logs correctly is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process of using the debarking facilities as prescribed is outlined according to company operational standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct procedure for setting up and operating debarking facilities is described in terms of company operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Health and Safety standards applicable in the facilities during the process of debarking are demonstrated. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An employed individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform the relevant responsible person in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. An unemployed Learner must arrange with the training provider for assessment.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • The manner/method and source of providing the learning that will enable compliance with the requirements of this Unit Standard, must be accredited by the ETQA.
  • Moderation of the assessment will be performed in the manner and by the moderator/s accredited for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • Assessment can be performed by means of oral testing, written tests and on-the-job observation. Formative assessment can be carried out during and after achievement of each specific outcome, and summative assessment at the conclusion of the training programme for this Unit Standard. Assessment will take place at a venue or workplace designated by the relevant assessor(s).
