PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to operate green Lumber edging facilities in green timber processing area of Lumber Mill.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Collect all the prescribed setting up tools and equipment and cutting tools (blades, knives) for the green lumber edging.
  • Set up the green lumber edging equipment and install the required cutting tools, to prescribed standards, in the prescribed manner.
  • Operate the board edging equipment in the prescribed manner to produce lumber of the prescribed width.
  • Control the throughput and quality to maintain prescribed standards.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Mathematical Literacy and Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Understanding of the detail of the Lumber Milling process, especially in the Wet Mill area.
  • Workplace procedures, health and safety measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 1.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Collect all the prescribed setting up tools and equipment and cutting tools (blades, knives) for the green lumber edging.

    The correct tools for setting up the green lumber edging facilities are assembled timeously according to worksite procedures.

    Set up the green lumber edging equipment and install the required cutting tools, to prescribed standards, in the prescribed manner.

    The throughput of green sawn products is achieved according to production schedule.

    The quality of green sawn products is achieved according to production schedule.

    Controls of the green lumber edging facility's throughput and quality are maintained according to worksite procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Perform routine maintenance and lubrication.

    Routine maintenance and lubrication schedules are carried out according to worksite procedures.

    The prescribed routine maintenance and lubrication schedules and reports are completed according to worksite procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.

    Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
