PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to perform an elementary hair cut using either scissors or clippers. It offers learners an opportunity to get the feel of using scissors or clippers at NQF Level 2.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Explain elementary haircutting techniques.
  • Perform an elementary haircutting service with scissors.
  • Perform an elementary haircutting service with clippers. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1.
  • Shampoo, condition and treat hair and scalp at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • All preparatory procedures may be carried out on a live model or on a mannequin.
  • The cutting service may be performed either on a live model or on a mannequin.
  • Elementary haircutting techniques include either:
    > A one length or a zero graduation cut.
    > A clipper cut.
