PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to work in a steel/reinforcing cutting workshop to operate and maintain steel cutting machinery. This includes the ability to demonstrate techniques for bending, bundling and tagging steel.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Preparing to cut reinforcing.
  • Cutting reinforcing.
  • Conducting post cutting operations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All tools and equipment required for the task are identified and confirmed to be functional for use in the designated work area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Steel to be cut is identified to be of the correct type, length and diameter in accordance with specified schedules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The steel cutting machine is checked to be functional in terms of the manufacturer's specifications and start up procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The cutting lengths and diameters are identified and set in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Productive work flow is adhered to in compliance with given schedules.

    Tools and equipment are used in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and safety requirements.

    Personal protective equipment is used in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and relevant safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cutting lengths, diameter and type of steel are confirmed in accordance with cutting sheets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Steel is fed into cutting machine at appropriate production rate according to manufacturers specifications or supplier's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Steel usage is optimised within tolerances in accordance with organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The consequences of feeding the reinforcing incorrectly are explained in terms of potential damage to machine and quality of work.

    The machine is shut down in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    The blades and attachments are checked and replaced where necessary in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not replacing blades regularly are explained in terms of potential damage to machine and lost productivity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reinforcing is bundled and tagged in accordance with organisational requirements.

    All documentation is completed in accordance with organisational requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
