PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to perform a hair extension service using a variety of techniques.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Explain hair extension principles and procedures.
  • Perform a manual hair extension using the weaving technique.
  • Perform a manual hair extension using the glue technique. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Identify disorders of the skin and hair at NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The hair extension procedure includes either the whole head or partial extensions.
  • Hair extension products include shampoo, mousse, setting and styling lotions, moulding gels, finishing hair sprays.
  • Hair pieces include any hair type including but not limited to artificial, synthetic or natural human hair.

    Contra-indications and precautions for use of hair extensions are explained in accordance with industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Factors influencing the choice of products and methods are explained in accordance with industry standards and client requirements.

    Safety precautions required in the process of hair extension application are explained in accordance with industry standards.

    Client's hair is prepared and sectioned for incorporation of the hair extension according to service requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hair is plaited according to industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hair extension is sewed onto plaits according to industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hair styling products are selected according to client requirements and manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Hair extension is styled according to client requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Work is conducted in accordance with industry accepted timeframes and client comfort. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Hair extension in is incorporated to ensure an integrated end result.

    Perform a manual hair extension using the glue technique.

    Hair styling products are selected according to client requirements and manufacturer's instructions.

    Hair extensions are styled according to client requirements.

    Work is conducted in accordance with industry accepted timeframes without causing the client to feel rushed.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA in accordance with the current ETQA regulations.
